About HELLO HOLLYWOOD AT HAROLD AND KUMAR 3D PREMIERE

You can call the humor in the Harold and Kumar movies mindless…

Inappropriate…

Even immature.

But you can’t call them unsuccessful. The first two Harold and Kumar films grossed 73 million dollars worldwide.

The formula is simple: two friends who are roommates seem to always end up going on a very complicated journey. In the first movie, Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle, they simply want hamburgers. On their way they encounter many obstacles, including:

A gang of extreme sports punks…

A cheetah that has escaped from a zoo…

And an out-of-control Neil Patrick Harris.

In the second film, Harold and Kumar are arrested, sent to jail, escape and run into an out-of-control Neil Patrick Harris.

In this third installment, six years have elapsed since their last adventure, leaving Harold and Kumar estranged from one another with very different families, friends, and lives. But when Kumar arrives on Harold's doorstep during the holiday season, he accidentally burns down the parent’s beloved Christmas tree. To fix the problem, Harold and Kumar embark on a mission through New York City to find the perfect Christmas tree, once again stumbling into trouble at every single turn.

I am a self-professed fan of the underdog story. “Mighty Ducks”, “The Replacements”, “Bad News Bears” – all on my top fave movies. Why? Something about the way the lesser kid musters up the courage and proclaims to the world, “enough is enough!” and work together as a team to overcome all obstacles. Yes, it’s sappy. And yes, it’s really cliché in Hollywood – but it’s something that will forever resonate with not just myself, but with millions around the world.

That’s also how I feel about Asian-Americans in Hollywood today. We are the underdogs. FYI – I am an Asian American, but work behind the camera on the business side. And I can’t help root for my other fellow Asian-Americans when I see them on-screen here in the US. It’s not the raise-your-fists-up-in-the-air kind of pride here, it’s more about giving a nod of acknowledgement that we ARE taking two steps forward in our place in Hollywood. It’s still an uphill climb – don’t get me wrong – but it’s progress and noticeable one at that. Let me do caveat that it’s not just about screen-time that pushes our identity, it’s the quality and diversity of role that we’re casted in. Sure, I love to see my fellow Asians in the kung-fu sock-em’ roles – but it cringes me to see that typical stereotype of the nerdy “oriental” fellow (I love Ken Jeong, but he’s not exactly helping us here a la “Hangover”).

So, that takes me to this guy here – John Cho. If you don’t know who he is, he’s Sulu on JJ Abrams’ “Star Trek”, the cop on “Flash Forward” (RIP. That was a great show), the “MILF” guy (no comment), and star of “Harold and Kumar”. We (my company) had a chance to interview him at the premiere of “Harold and Kumar”; and he’s the nicest down-to-earth guy you can meet. Here’s a guy who stands toe-to-toe with other blockbuster movies as the main lead.

I was at the premiere and I must say, the two leads, are the nicest guys you will ever meet. I haven't seen the movie, but watching the trailer, it looks very stupid - which to me means VERY FUNNY.
